UM MULTICULTURAL TOASTMASTERS CLUB LOOKING FOR MEMBERS

What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters is a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has nearly 235,000 members in 11,700 clubs in 92 countries, offering a proven – and enjoyable – way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills.

The Graduate School and the Foreign Student Scholars Office sponsor a campus Toastmasters club for students. Check out the website: www.umt.edu/mctm/ or www.toastmasters.org

Why Join a Toastmasters Club?

The one skill mentioned most often by employers is the ability to speak effectively. Successful communication is critical in every job. Toastmasters learn speaking skills and develop a basic foundation in public speaking. Some students join the campus club to improve their speaking and presentation skills for success in their programs. Other students join the club to improve their chances of success in finding employment after earning their degrees. But Toastmasters also learn many other skills that are highly valued by employers. They include:

Listening Skills: Employers want employees with good listening skills. Toastmasters learn to listen to more than words. They become experts on language nuances, vocal inflection, and the subtleties of body language.

Diversity: In an increasingly diverse workplace, the graduate students in UM’s Multicultural Toastmasters group gain an advantage. In UM’s group, members are speaking, listening to, and working with a diverse cross-section of graduate students from different countries and cultural backgrounds.

Teamwork: In UM’s Multicultural Toastmasters Club, members develop the ability to effectively team with others of different backgrounds, leadership and communication styles. In job interviews, current members point to their Toastmaster experience as evidence that they’ll flourish in today’s multicultural job setting.

Professional Skills in Organizational Behavior: Student Toastmasters learn how to run productive meetings, prepare agendas, and develop social skills that allow them to interact in professional environments. Toastmasters are confident when meeting strangers and they learn how to put their best foot forward to present themselves in the best possible way

During the past two years, student Toastmasters have received job and internship offers, received scholarships, and won presentation awards. All of these students credit some of their success to participation in the campus Toastmasters club.

UM Multicultural Toastmasters meets every Wednesday from 12:10 to 1:00 in the University Center. The meetings are usually held on the third floor in the Alumni Board Room. Please check the UC daily schedule that is posted at every entrance for exact meeting place.

Interested students are welcome to come as guests anytime. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Kamensky in the Graduate School at mary.kamensky@umontana.edu or Barb Seekins in the Foreign Student Scholar Office at seekinsbh@mso.umt.edu.

We look forward to meeting you!

SCHOLARSHIPS

FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

Announcing the The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship, a competitive national program that provides college graduates the opportunity to work in Washington, DC, with a public-interest organization focusing on international security issues. All U.S. citizens, and foreign nationals residing in the United States, are eligible to apply; non-U.S. citizens living outside of the United States are not.

The program has awarded 115 Fellowships since its inception in 1987. The fellowship is offered twice yearly, in the spring and fall. It lasts from six to nine months and provides a stipend, health insurance, and travel costs to Washington. The Scoville Fellowship does not award grant or scholarship money to students.

Scoville Fellows may undertake a variety of activities, including research, writing, and advocacy in support of the goals of their host organization and may attend coalition meetings, policy briefings, and Congressional hearings. They have written fact sheets, letters to the editor, op-eds, magazine articles, briefing books and reports, organized talks and conferences, and been interviewed as experts by the media. Many former Scoville Fellows work for U.S. and international NGOs, the Federal Government, and academia, or attend graduate school in political science or international relations, following their fellowships.

Please encourage those interested in peace and security issues to visit our website at www.scoville.org <http://www.scoville.org/> . Although the majority of Scoville Fellows received college degrees in political science, government, international relations, or history, we do not require any specific major; science majors are particularly encouraged to apply. There is no application form; the application requirements are listed on the website, as are links to the websites of each of the twenty-five participating organizations and information on the work of current and former Scoville Fellows.
